Legacy Medal 3: Accentuate Will Share New Models of Working with Disabled People, Across the UK and Internationally

Accentuate will continue its work developing and sharing its expertise, particularly around delivering accessible practices, on a national scale in 2013.

This medal explores a further expansion of Accentuate’s work through the project Accentuate Heritage.  Accentuate Heritage will be a programme of activity that builds on the successes of Creative Landscapes as well as developing some new areas of work around the distinctive heritage and stories of deaf and disabled people.  Accentuate Heritage will ensure that Accentuate creates a national legacy from the work undertaken as well as raising its national profile, by delivering three national training events based on the learning that has been garnered in delivering accessible Heritage Open Day events.  Over and above this, there will be a research and feasibility study undertaken during 2013, exploring the heritage and stories of deaf and disabled people.  This will lead to the development of a major disability history project.
Accentuate’s  Heritage will continue to bring together the ideas, energy and learning that has grown over the four years of the Creative Landscapes project; from Hidden Battles, a pilot project in 2008, to the three creative explorations of Fort Brockhurst through to Heritage Open Days in September 2012. Over its four years the Creative Landscapes project has worked with individuals and heritage groups in Gosport and Hastings & St Leonards to explore low cost, creative and achievable ways of making heritage events, and in particular Heritage Open Days (HOD) events, more accessible for disabled and deaf audiences.  Accentuate is delighted that our website now hosts a whole range of resources in the Accentuate Heritage Section. These pages are a record of the work of Creative Landscapes, but also part of its lasting legacy. In the Resources Section you will find guides and ideas to help you make your events more accessible.

Alongside Accentuate Heritage, there will be continued investment in providing resources and toolkits for a variety of sectors.  Whether you are interested in putting on an accessible event or want to know how best to consult with deaf and disabled people, Accentuate will provide useful and relevant information as well as leading in developing innovative models of working.

Accentuate is the London 2012 Legacy Programme for the South East.  Accentuate has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, creating a lasting impact from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by funding ideas and local talent to inspire creativity across the UK, SEEDA and the Regional Cultural Agencies.  Screen South is the home of Accentuate.
